Antalya has two waterfalls, both called Duden, and they are nothing like each other.
The Upper Duden is a 20-metre cascade in a forested park, surrounded by picnic tables and tea gardens. It’s calm, green, and easy to reach from the city centre. The Lower Duden is something else entirely — it falls off a cliff face directly into the Mediterranean Sea. That combination, a river ending not in a lake or a valley but in the open sea, is genuinely rare. You can see it from the coastal road, but the view that stays with you is from a boat, looking up at the water falling into the waves.
This guide covers both falls: where they are, how to get there, what to expect, and what most visitors miss.

The Lower Duden Waterfall
The Lower Duden is the one people photograph. Located 12km east of Antalya city centre near the Lara coast, it marks the point where the Duden River — which starts in the mountains above the city — reaches the sea by dropping off a 40-metre cliff directly into the Mediterranean.
There is a viewing area on the coastal road above and below the waterfall where you can see it from land. The view is good. But the waterfall faces seaward, which means you’re always looking at its back from the shore. The front of it — the full face of the cascade, the spray rising off the water, the cliff towering above — you only see from the sea.

Seeing the Lower Duden from the Sea
Several boat trips run along this stretch of coast from Antalya’s old harbour, specifically to pass in front of the Lower Duden. The approach is gradual: you round the coastal cliffs, and then the waterfall appears — falling from above directly onto the water in front of you. On calmer days, boats come close enough to feel the spray.
We run the [Grand Waterfall Boat Tour] year-round — a 2.5-hour trip along the cliff coast that includes the Lower Duden up close. It runs in winter as well as summer, and the waterfall is actually stronger in spring and early winter when rainfall is higher.
If you’re going to visit the Lower Duden, the boat trip is the version worth doing. The land viewing point is fine for a photograph, but the boat gives you the experience.
Lower Duden Waterfall from Land
If you prefer to visit independently from the shore:
– **Location**: Follow the coast road east toward Lara. The waterfall viewpoint is at Karpuzkaldıran Beach, roughly 12km from Kaleiçi
– **Access**: Free, accessible by car or taxi (approximately €8–10 from the city centre)
– **Parking**: Small car park at the viewing area
– **Best time**: Morning — the light hits the waterfall from the east in the early hours
The park around the viewing area has a small café and benches. It’s a popular spot with local families on weekends.

The Upper Duden Waterfall
The Upper Duden (Yukarı Duden) sits 12km north of Antalya city centre, in the hills above the city. The water originates from a spring system near Kırkgöz, travels underground for long stretches, and emerges here as a wide 20-metre waterfall dropping into a gorge.
The setting is a wooded park — considerably cooler than the coast in summer, with shade, pathways along the river, and a cave system you can walk into directly behind the waterfall. On weekends, local families come here for picnics. On weekdays, it’s quiet.
What to Do at Upper Duden
**Walk behind the waterfall**: A narrow path leads into the cave system carved out by the water over centuries. You can stand directly behind the cascade. It’s wet and the footing requires care, but it’s the highlight of the visit.
**The river walk**: Upstream from the waterfall, there’s a short trail along the Duden River through forest. Good for 30–45 minutes of walking before the heat of the day.
**Picnic area**: The park has shaded tables, a tea garden, and basic food stalls. It’s a legitimate half-morning outing if you’re with family or want to escape the city heat.
Practical Information — Upper Duden

Other Waterfalls Near Antalya
The Duden pair are the most visited, but the region has several other waterfalls worth knowing about.
Kursunlu Waterfall
About 19km east of Antalya, Kurşunlu is a wider, lower cascade (about 18 metres) set within a nature park with walking trails, a small lake, and dense forest. The park is quieter than Upper Duden and the walking trails around the stream are particularly pleasant. Entry fee applies.
**Best for**: A longer nature walk, families who want green space and easy terrain.
Karpuzkaldiran Waterfall
Also known as “The Watermelon Splitter” — a name that gives you some idea of the local character. This smaller waterfall is close to the Lower Duden viewing area on the Lara coast road. It’s less dramatic than its neighbour but the surrounding rocky coastline is worth seeing.
**Best for**: Combining with a Lower Duden visit — both are within a few kilometres of each other on the coast road.
Manavgat Waterfall
Not technically Antalya city, but 75km east near Side. The Manavgat falls are wide and low — more of a rapid than a waterfall — but the volume of water is significant and the setting is different from the mountain falls. Often combined with a visit to Manavgat Bazaar or the Side ruins.

How to Visit the Duden Waterfalls
Option 1: Independently by Taxi or Rental Car
The two Duden falls are 24km apart — Upper is north of the city, Lower is east on the coast. Visiting both in one day by taxi is feasible but means some backtracking. A rental car gives more flexibility.
**Suggested independent route**:
Morning → Upper Duden (cave walk, park, tea) → Drive to city for lunch → Afternoon → Coast road to Lower Duden viewing point → Return to hotel
Budget approximately €25–40 for taxis if not using a rental car.
Option 2: Guided Boat Trip (for Lower Duden)
The [Relax Waterfall Boat Tour] covers the Lower Duden from the sea — which, as described above, is the more impressive angle. Hotel pickup is included from Lara, Belek, Kemer and Kundu.
Option 3: The Full City Tour
The most efficient way to see both Duden falls plus the rest of Antalya’s highlights is the [Antalya City Tour] — it covers Upper Duden, the coastal boat trip past Lower Duden, Kaleiçi, and the museum in one guided day. Hotel pickup included, no upfront payment.

Best Time to Visit
**Spring (March–May)**: The best conditions for the waterfalls — winter rainfall has increased the water volume, temperatures are mild, and the parks are green. Both Upper and Lower Duden run strongest in this period.
**Summer (June–September)**: Upper Duden is popular but the forested park stays cooler than the coast. Lower Duden boat trips run daily. Water volume is lower than spring.
**Autumn (October–November)**: Quiet, cooler, and the first autumn rains start increasing flow again. Underrated time to visit — the park at Upper Duden is particularly attractive with changing leaf colour.
**Winter (December–February)**: Both falls operate. Upper Duden park may have reduced hours. The Lower Duden boat trip runs year-round (weather permitting). Water flow is at its highest after significant rainfall.

FAQ‘s About Antalya Duden Waterfalls
Yes — particularly the Lower Duden, which is genuinely unusual: a river falling directly into the sea is rare anywhere in the world. The Upper Duden is a pleasant half-morning in a green setting. The walk behind the Upper Duden cave is the highlight of that site.
The Lower Duden coastal viewing area is free. The Upper Duden park charges a small entrance fee. Boat trips to see the Lower Duden from the sea are paid separately.
Upper Duden is 12km north — about 20–25 minutes by car. Lower Duden is 12km east toward Lara — also about 20 minutes by car. They are on opposite sides of the city, so visiting both in one day requires planning.
Not at the waterfalls themselves. The Upper Duden gorge is rocky and not suitable for swimming. At the Lower Duden, the water meets the sea at a rocky coastline. For swimming, the beaches at Konyaaltı or Lara are nearby.
Different experiences. Lower Duden is more dramatic — the visual of a waterfall meeting the sea is spectacular, especially from a boat. Upper Duden is more accessible, more peaceful, and has the cave walk. If you can only do one and want the more unusual experience, the Lower Duden boat trip wins.
Kurşunlu Waterfall (19km east, nature park setting), Karpuzkaldıran (near Lower Duden on the coast road), and Manavgat Falls (75km east, near Side). All are day-trip distance from Antalya.
Yes. Both are accessible year-round. Winter is actually when the water volume is highest after rainfall. The Upper Duden park may have reduced hours. The Lower Duden boat trip runs subject to sea conditions.
