Istanbul Excursions — Two Continents, One City

Istanbul is the only city in the world built across two continents. The Bosphorus strait runs 31km through the middle of the city, separating Europe from Asia, with 15 bridges crossing it. The European side holds the historic peninsula — Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar within walking distance of each other. The Asian side is quieter, more residential, and gives the best views back across the water toward the minarets.

Hagia Sophia stood as the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years after its construction in 537 AD. It became a mosque under the Ottomans in 1453, was converted to a museum in 1934, and returned to active use as a mosque in 2020. Non-Muslim visitors can still enter — outside of prayer times, which occur five times daily. The interior scale is difficult to convey in photographs; the dome rises 55 meters and covers an area larger than a football pitch.

Topkapi Palace was the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire for four centuries. The complex covers 700,000 square meters and houses the Imperial Treasury, the Harem quarters, and relics including the Prophet's cloak and sword. The Fourth Courtyard terrace gives views over the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the Sea of Marmara simultaneously. The palace receives over three million visitors annually — arriving early makes a significant difference.

Bosphorus cruises run from Eminönü and Karaköy piers daily. The route passes Dolmabahçe Palace on the European shore, the Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian shore, the Rumeli Fortress, and the second Bosphorus Bridge. Evening cruises run year-round. All Istanbul excursions include guided commentary and hotel pickup from your Istanbul accommodation.

Planning Your Istanbul Trip

  • Best time to visit: April through June and September through November. Spring brings the Tulip Festival in April. Summer is hot and very crowded at major sites. Winter is quieter with shorter queues — Hagia Sophia and Topkapi are significantly less busy December through February.
  • Hagia Sophia entry: Free for Muslim worshippers. Non-Muslim visitors enter free but must remove shoes and women should cover their heads — scarves available at the entrance. Closed to tourists during prayer times (approximately 30 minutes each, five times daily).
  • Topkapi Palace: Allow 3-4 hours minimum. The Harem requires a separate ticket. Arrive at opening (9:00 AM) to avoid queues at the Treasury. Audio guide available at the entrance.
  • Grand Bazaar: Open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Over 4,000 shops across 61 covered streets. Prices are negotiable — starting offers are typically 2-3 times the expected price. The Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar) nearby is smaller and less overwhelming for first visits.
  • Getting around: Istanbul traffic is heavy — metro and tram are faster than taxis between major sites. The T1 tram connects Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar, Karaköy, and Kabataş. Istanbulkart (transport card) works on all public transport.
  • From Antalya: Istanbul is 700km from Antalya — 90-minute flight or 10-hour bus. Most visitors fly. We offer 2-day Istanbul tours from Antalya with accommodation and guided itinerary included.

Istanbul Excursions FAQ

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are ideal for sightseeing with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Bosphorus cruises run year-round, while summer is best for evening tours and island trips.

Due to traffic restrictions in the Historic Peninsula, most tours operate with central meeting points within walking distance of Sultanahmet and Taksim hotels. For Bosphorus cruises and full-day programs, organized transfers are provided when logistics allow.

Yes, guided tours are designed to cover major highlights such as Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Grand Bazaar efficiently, making them ideal for visitors with limited time in the city.

Most city tours run between 4 and 8 hours, depending on the number of sites visited. Bosphorus cruises and evening experiences are shorter and can easily fit into a half-day schedule

Wear comfortable walking shoes for historic areas, carry modest clothing for mosque visits, and keep a small amount of cash for entrances, drinks, or personal expenses.

The four essential sites are Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar — all within walking distance of each other in the Sultanahmet district. A Bosphorus cruise adds the view from the water. Most full-day guided tours cover all four landmarks plus a cruise in one day.

A full-day Istanbul city tour runs 8-10 hours and covers the main Sultanahmet landmarks plus a Bosphorus cruise. Half-day tours (4-5 hours) focus on either the historic peninsula or the Bosphorus. Private tours can be customized by duration and pace.

Yes. The cruise gives the only perspective where you can see both the European and Asian shores simultaneously, with Dolmabahçe Palace, the Rumeli Fortress, and the bridges visible from the water. Yes. Istanbul receives over 20 million international visitors annually. The main tourist areas — Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Karaköy — have high police presence and are well-lit at night. Standard precautions apply: watch belongings in crowded areas like the Grand Bazaar and on public transport, and use licensed taxis or apps like BiTaksi rather than unlicensed vehicles.
